From May 23rd to June 19th, Rakuten together with BEAMS held an event at the BEAMS JAPAN store in Shinjuku, Tokyo, called Rakuten meets BEAMS JAPAN. During the event, BEAMS staff presented their favorite household items selected from Rakuten Ichiba, covering everything from interior design to gardening tools and cooking condiments.
Rakuten Institute of Technology supported the event with our wallshop technology, a new shopping experience using large digital signage. Instead of a regular store shelf, multiple users can simultaneously browse, get details, and even purchase their items from a digital storefront by using their smartphones as controllers. This was the first time we presented the wallshop to the wider public, so we were very happy that so many decided to test it out, and it was great seeing everyone’s excited reactions to the technology.
When we first show new technologies off like this, it is always both exciting and scary, but we are happy to report that the response was overwhelmingly positive. We are now hard at work looking into all the valuable feedback we received, and how to make the service even better in the future!
